She's met them
all: Hillary, Obama, Edwards, Richardson, and others like
them. While a guest on MSNBC's Hardball
with Chris
Matthews, she contrasted a sitting president with Iowans,
whom, she said, did not like being lied to. When she's
not juggling candidates' Meet 'n Greets or researching
cold cases, she's teaching her three dogs how to do a
police line-up, reminding her son certain behavior is
inappropriate in mixed company, or rushing out the door
to assist with a family crisis or another celebration
that comes prepackaged with a large, extended
family.
Kids, Dogs
& Democrats Running Wild: Campaigning for Sanity in
Iowa is a
seriocomic roller-coaster ride through the
First-in-the-Nation Caucus State, where riders get off
only long enough to attend family reunions, weddings or
funerals, feed the dogs, kiss a child's bruised knee or
ego, and perhaps even celebrate another hard won day in
the life of living on the edge in America's
Heartland.

When I
visualize my late [first] father, his image never
changes. A yellow shooting shirt with a padded right
shoulder. Khaki pants with sewn cuffs. Old worn cowboy
boots but a crisp tan Stetson tilted low on his brow.
He's leaning into the 12-gauge, his finger on the
trigger. I both admired and feared him, but never
considered him vulnerable. He first proved me wrong the
summer of '69. "Pull" is based on the incident that
taught me love wears many hats.
